VIDEO! Sketchbook Ideas

I did a video on a sketchbook I did for a friend as a gift for Christmas – check it out to get some good ideas for a sketchbook, to see a little bit of what is in this sketchbook and to see my totally messy studio (it’s that time of year that the studio stays looking like it exploded). Hope you enjoy it and expect to see more videos coming – I plan to do more videos in the upcoming year and hope it will be a more common feature on my blog, youtube channel, and instagram (@sandigrady1). Come find me on those other avenues and subscribe to get updates of new things.

Oil Pastel Sketches

I’ve been playing with my new oil pastels and I’m loving them! The colors look so different on black and white paper so it’s been fun seeing how the different colors look. I’m learning that I don’t love layering them – I think they look best with each color standing alone on its own. I think these are going to make a perfect medium for my travels this summer and I’m looking forward to making some colorful sketches in Maine this summer!!! Let me know what you think about this medium for sketching.

Here I first did a black and white sketch and I liked the shapes and value so I played around with doing it in color I think I like the black and white better.

I’ve been doing some really large paintings in oil kind of like this sketch – once I get some pics I’ll share them here with you. I’ve been doing them in oil bars and really really chunky paint. There little guys were SO much fun to do with my oil pastels though – I will definitely be sketching more animals (probably some birds soon) with this new medium.

Mothers

The title is appropriate because one of these paintings is of my mother-in-law from a black & white of her when she was young. The flower painting is in memory of my sister’s mother who pasted away recently. When my sister called me to tell me of her mom’s illness months ago I picked out one of my favorite flower paintings to set aside for her mom’s funeral – we knew it would not be long before she passed. I wanted to send her flowers that would last and have something tangible for her to keep in memory of her mom. My sister Jackie is one of my BIGGEST fans (gotta love family that gives you such encouragement!) so I knew it would be special for her. It is an oil bar painting.

The Path To Spring…

“Let the winter come – it’s the only path to spring.”

8×8 Oil Stick

That’s about the only thing I like about winter – it’s the path to spring! The bleak, cold, dead, dreary, colorless days of winter are what make the warm, life-filled, colorful days of spring so exciting and beautiful.  And it’s a beautiful picture of the gospel – death gives way to new Life!

This painting was done with my oil sticks. I love the buttery loose feel of these and how you have to layer and mix the paint on the board. I’ve been doing a LOT of flower paintings like this – more to come later!
