Diverting from art – Real life here!
Today I have a small celebration – I’m a type 1 diabetic and for the last 2 years have been giving myself multiple shots for any food I eat and for high blood sugars. Tomorrow I am getting an insulin pump and won’t have to do this any more on a daily basis – whoop whoop!!! Here’s a short video to give you a peek at what 10 months of shots looks like! The finished painting! I couldn’t get one single photo to capture the color accurately – so frustrating! This is the best I could do but the original is so much prettier and has a creamy buttery feel about it.

More on the Process

This is all I do for a “drawing” when I start a painting. I use paint and a larger brush than you would expect (not a pencil for my drawing). This helps keep my painting loose. This is the beginning of the largest painting I’ve ever painted (hint – I’m finished with it and I think it’s my favorite painting I’ve ever done – more to come later). Yep, another of my African Woman and Children paintings. I’ve been doing this series all the way back to my watercolor days and I’ve never painted from the original photo since that first watercolor of the African Women and Children (you can see it and read about it here). I paint from the other paintings I’ve done each time.

The Process

Thought I’d show you some of the process I go through with my paintings. Sometimes I feel like something just isn’t working with a painting- sometimes I know what it is and sometimes I don’t. USUALLY I leave things alone because I USUALLY ruin a painting when I start trying to fix things, but lately I’ve been trying to have more confidence and fix what I feel is wrong. In other words, trying not to let fear hold me back from making an ok painting into a better painting. The painting above is my “fixed” version and the one below is the one I felt like something about the background was off.
One of the reasons I usually just leave it alone is because I’m a TERRIBLE judge of my own work!!! You may agree and feel like the first one was better!

Family Pictures

Playing with old family photos. This is what it looks like for me to play in the studio! I’m not going for an exact looking portrait- I’m just using the photo as a spring board for shapes and color/design hints. This one is of my parents before I was born. In the lower left corner I wrote what was on the back of the photo – my older sister Jackie took this photo – she would have been a little girl at the time.
