Sandi Hester, oil 18×24, African Women & Children

Here’s another version of my African Women and Children but in a whole new color palette – neutrals. This painting may still look very colorful, but every color on this painting is a neutral – meaning every color has red, yellow, and blue in it and is basically a grey. At one point I put a pure color on the painting and it literally looked like a neon sign! That’s one of the things you must know how to do for a painting to be good – know how to make neutrals. Every color on here I would try to “kill” (meaning knock it down – grey it down) – it would look like “mud” on my palette and then I’d put a stroke on the painting and it would look like a glowing yellow or red or blue.

The Process

Thought I’d show you some of the process I go through with my paintings. Sometimes I feel like something just isn’t working with a painting- sometimes I know what it is and sometimes I don’t. USUALLY I leave things alone because I USUALLY ruin a painting when I start trying to fix things, but lately I’ve been trying to have more confidence and fix what I feel is wrong. In other words, trying not to let fear hold me back from making an ok painting into a better painting. The painting above is my “fixed” version and the one below is the one I felt like something about the background was off.

One of the reasons I usually just leave it alone is because I’m a TERRIBLE judge of my own work!!! You may agree and feel like the first one was better!

What playing in the studio looks like for me. This is obviously not my normal style, but I love experimenting with different methods and styles.

I’m going to try and start posting again 😬. I’ve been good at posting on Instagram and am going to try and post at both places (blog and Instagram) each time. Where in the world to start after not posting in SOOOOOO long??? Start with what I posted today in Instagram 😉! So here ya go!

Meet Birdie – Our Airstream

IMG_3442

Day we picked up Birdie – my dad joined us and that made it even more special!

I know this isn’t about my art (even though I do have two paintings I did in the airstream so maybe that counts 🙂 ) but I thought you guys might like to see this any ways. A couple of years ago Grady got this wild idea to get an airstream. We’ve only camped once together, even though I camped with my dad as a kid, it was not the kind of vacation we take now. I was NOT sold on the idea. But as we searched for an old airstream, visited dealerships and looked at new airstreams, and drove through campsites while we were on vacations I started to get the airstream and camping bug. We thought we’d get an airstream to try – we didn’t want to put a ton of money into something we had no idea if we would even like it. Grady searched for almost 2 years to find this beauty and last summer we went and picked her up! And my dad went with us to pick her up, a memory I will always treasure!

IMG_0830Over the next several months we spent cleaning her, decorating her, and fixing her. Due to life (sickness, work, weather, etc) we just took our maiden voyage a couple of weeks ago! I really really really wanted to take it with my dad and we were able to do that!!! It was the perfect camping trip – we had a total blast!IMG_3914

And Cooper (our wire-haired pointing griffon) was the perfect camping dog. He was better at the campsite than he is at home!!

I took a short video (it actually ended up being 2 short videos because I didn’t know how to work my camera) of our airstream – you can see it here and part 2 here. Or you can click on part 1: Airstream Part 1  part 2: Airstream Part 2 IMG_3510Hope you enjoy the video and pics of our little home on wheels. We love her and can’t wait to take our next trip! And Daddy and Pat (and Patches), thanks for a great maiden voyage!
