My Male Model
by sandihester
I am my lover’s and my lover is mine…there is no flaw in you. Song of Songs 6:3; 4:7
I’m being very vulnerable here and showing you paintings that I normally would NEVER show you. I thought I would show you what I do some Sunday afternoons when we’re at home relaxing. I don’t do much figure painting because I’m really bad at it, so Sunday afternoons if Grady is posted up on the couch flipping the tube or napping – he becomes my model. As you can see I have a ways to go on my figure painting 🙂 – but how in the world am I ever going to get better if I don’t practice??? At least that’s what I keep telling myself when I butcher Grady’s face in a painting – sorry baby. If I ever do get decent at it I’ll only be able to paint people with hair on their face 🙂 because Grady is my only model at this point – he’s the only one brave enough to undergo my slaughtering. Ok, so I thought I would include a real picture of Grady for those that don’t know him – you can see he’s very normal looking – he doesn’t have a weird shaped head, over-sized hands, and he’s not cross-eyed – he’s VERY handsome and I wish I could capture that on paper – maybe one day! At least they’re not boring – if nothing else you’ll get a good laugh out of them…
I actually think they are good…except for the fact that Grady’s hand looks like it has been stung by a bee and he is having an allergic reaction with it all puffed up. If you want to show how far you have come with your drawing/painting, you should share the one you did of Hannah… HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! Oh….that still makes me laugh!!!
Grady and I were just laughing our heads off at Grady’s (bee stung) hand – we said the same thing!!! I think I was going for perspective and killed it. I’m laughing my head off at your comment about Hannah’s painting – I still have it just for a good laugh sometimes. However, I redeemed myself with her – you have a pretty good drawing of her that I did. Remind me to show you a quick sketch I did of her from her birthday party – when she was in her ballerina outfit – it didn’t turn out great but you would probably still like to see it. Thanks for the funny comment!
Sandi: It is wonderful to see a photo of you and Grady. I miss seeing you. As for the pictures…they ARE a bit VanGoghish. I’m especially worried about Grady’s ear.
Seriously, you are doing fine. Keep at it. I think your paintings are wonderful.

Hey Marge!!! I miss you too! Ok that is too funny about Grady’s ear – I know – it’s a little weird, but on that painting (the one where he doesn’t have any eyes) I didn’t even do a pencil sketch before – I just went for it with paint – so things are a little out of proportion but for not doing a sketch before hand I was pleased how it turned out. Faces are SO hard!!! Hey, I may be doing some teaching this summer – I’m thinking about teaching some watercolor classes! My focus would be on how to painting loosely. Hope you’re doing good!!!
Okay, when I first looked at them I didn’t notice that he had no eyes nor did I notice the hand. Actually, I thought “this is pretty good….looks just like Grady”. You can tell I am no art critic! LOL
That’s SO funny Barbara – leave it to me to point out all my flaws :). I’m glad you thought it looked just like Grady – I’m not sure he agrees.
