Getting All High-Tech Here – A Video!

Well, at least this is high-tech for me :)! I did a little video tour of my art room for you guys. I shot it with my iPhone so the quality isn’t too bad but it’s rather shaky, Grady says it’s too long, I tripped on the stool, and I rambled on, BUT other than all of that I hope you enjoy it. If you have trouble playing it you can go directly to youtube here and watch it http://youtu.be/7ivrfF2mX7A. Please let me know if you have any problems with viewing it.

I also wanted to mention that I’m heading to a painting workshop next week – I’m major excited about it! A few months ago I stumbled onto an artist I really like – Peggi Kroll Roberts http://www.krollroberts.com/Gallery%20Peggi%20Kroll-Roberts.htm. She has a very  loose style which I love and she’s a great teacher. She has some wonderful DVD’s available http://www.krollroberts.com/DVD’s.htm that I highly recommend for anyone painting in any medium.

She really covers some of the fundamentals and gives some great painting exercises. I’ve watched the videos MULTIPLE times (if that tells you anything!). I’m sure I’ll have lots to share from the workshop when I get back! Also, she’s coming here to Nashville to do a workshop in July, if you’re interested check out the information on her website about workshops.

Painting Day With Aunt Sandi

My beautiful niece, Hannah, comes over to have paint days with her Aunt Sandi. We try to do some kind of art lesson together. She’s very talented and loves to do art! The last two lesson’s I’ve taught her how to set up a still life to paint and then we work on lessons revolving around a still life set-up – like deciding what simple shapes we can break the objects down into (like a circle, square, etc.). You can see the still life set-up we did (mostly designed by Hannah herself) and the quick sketch I did for her to help her see the size and simple shapes the objects can be when put down on paper. She did a great job, but more importantly she had a blast painting. The first time we ever did a still life she spent more time setting up her still life than anything else – she really liked designing it. It was really cute!

So, after our painting time we went out to the pond to visit our geese and feed them. Hannah wanted to carry her bread in a cute little basket and she wanted to take the harmonica to serenade the geese. The last photo really captures how she was feeling when she was “playing” a song for the geese – she wanted to play very softly for the momma goose because momma was on her nest and Hannah didn’t want to scare her. It was a wonderful day and I wanted to share a little bit of it here with you guys. You can also see little glimpses of my art room in the pictures – hint hint – next post has to do with the art room. Please click on the pictures above to see them larger.

Farmhouses

I don’t know what it is about old houses, but I LOVE to paint them. I’ve painted both of these before here in acrylic and I’ve painted this second one in watercolor but never posted it for some reason.

I went outside recently to paint a picture of our house but it ended bad – Cooper barely touched my tripod (he was wanting some loving from his mamma) and everything went splat! My painting is on the bottom of one of those stacks :(.

Butterflies

Here are a couple of butterflies I did in acrylic. This first one was done with a palette knife – I love the edges, texture, and thick paint you get when using a knife.

Experimenting With Paint

First I’d like to give you an update on Templeton – he’s no longer with us. After just one week we had to give him back to his foster family because my allergies were getting the best of me. He shed far more than we thought at the beginning and unfortunately health won over Cooper’s new furry friend. Last I checked Templeton still wasn’t adopted so if you’re looking for a great dog for your family that is great with kids then let me know and I’ll put you in touch with the foster family.

As far as painting, I’ve been doing a ton. We went on two ski trips that I spent most of the time in the room painting, so I have lots to show you. I’ve really been experimenting a lot so some of these may not even look like they came from me. I have so many I’m not even sure where to start so I just scattered them through this post. Some are done much tighter than I like (like the blue coffee cup) but I still like how it turned out overall. A couple of them were done with a palette knife which keeps you loose and make great edges (swimmers in ocean and glue/lemon still life).

And lastly this apple was done very quickly – just playing around with the paint. All of these are done in acrylic and the next several posts will be paintings I did in acrylic but as soon as I got home from our last trip I ordered oils, because I LOVED the acrylic but it dried WAY too quickly for me so I thought I would just jump in completely and try the medium that has intimidated me ever since I even thought about painting. Well, I could just kick myself for not trying oil sooner – I am in serious love – too in love – it’s all I want to do is paint. I can’t wait to show you some of the oil paintings. They look very similar to acrylics but yummier – it’s like painting with soft butter and the color is amazing!

All of these are small 4×4 or 5×7 and will be available for sale at my summer art sale (well, most of them will be for sale – some of them I’m going to keep – I still have some bare walls in our new house).

The New Addition

I would like to introduce you to Cooper’s new best bud – Templeton! I’ve been keeping my eye on PetFinders – a website that lets you see what dogs are up for adoption around you –  for a couple of months. Cooper LOVES other dogs and I thought since we have all this land why not get another one :)! This little guy is a great fit for our family – he’s laid back – he’s kind of like a little old man – he moves slow and gentle unless he’s playing with Cooper. They have some major WWF wrestling matches – they just waller around on the floor together and then after the wrestling match they both collapse in sheer exhaustion! Templeton came for a “sleep over” this weekend to see if he’d be a good fit and it went WAY better than I ever imagined it would go. If I start back volunteering at a nursing home he will be a great one to take with me to love on the old people because he’s very gentle and has an old soul and is just a love bug. He’s only about a year old but he acts more like he’s 10 years old – except for when he’s playing with Cooper. Cooper acts more like he’s 10 years old now too – guess they are both wearing each other out. It’s a good fit for all of us. It was Grady’s turn to name our dog and I think he came up with a great name that fits this dog really good!

Cooper – All Grown Up

I haven’t shown you any pictures of Cooper since he was a little pup so I thought I’d do a quick post of some of his “grown up” pictures. Some words that describe him are: fun, lazy, and a big goof ball! The pictures capture a little of that. His favorite things in life are frisbee, sleeping, going running with his dad, and giving big sloppy kisses to EVERYONE. The last picture is of him snuggled up in my lap while I’m having my quiet time – he makes for a good table :). Click on any of the photos to see them larger.

New Look and New Medium

You may, or may not, have noticed there is a new look to my blog. It’s a little cleaner and fresher. Because of the new look some of my older posts may be a little wonky :). I’m not going to take the time to clean them up – please just over look the wonkiness.

I’ve been playing around with a new medium lately that I really really love – acrylics. As always, there’s a big learning curve when you start a new medium but it’s been fun playing around with something new. It’s actually been hard to pull me away from my studio because of this new medium. For those of you who may be interested, I came across a great website that has a lot to share about acrylics. There’s lots of instruction, tips, and FREE videos!!! Yahoo for that! Here’s the link if you’d like to check it out www.willkempartschool.com. I also signed up for Will’s art courses and they were really good.

I still have a LOT to learn with this medium but I thought I’d share some of my first paintings with you. I’m adding several to this post since it may be while before I get back on here again – at least that seems to be the pattern :). You can click on the picture to see any of them larger. All of these except the red barn are small 6 x 6 paintings. There’s also some glare on some of these – I’m still working on photographing these acrylic paintings without glare – it’s much different from photographing my watercolor paintings.

My Blogging Has Gone To The Birds

Hey, it’s me – I’m back – sort of! I kind of forgot how to do this. I just sat and stared at the screen trying to remember what I even click on to start a new post. As most of you know, we’ve been building a house and it has totally consumed all my time and creative energy. We are finally in our new house and LOVING it out in the country. I have been sketching here and there over the last year or so. For some reason I’ve been sketching birds a lot. So over the next couple of posts I’ll share some of my bird sketches. I would like your feed back on how I post my sketches. Would you rather see the whole page in its sketchbook form like this…

Or cleaned up and cropped like this…

Here’s another example of sketch book view or cropped. The last picture is cropped because the bird’s body was wonky but I liked his little face. Maybe next time I’ll write something worth reading. Sorry – I’m a little rusty.

Handmade Journals

Well, it’s been quite a while since I posted last and I’ve been getting lots of e-mails from you guys asking (nicely) what’s up :)! I’ll make this post loaded with lots of art and pictures since I have some making up to do. I haven’t been painting much lately because the house (we are building) is taking up all my creative time and energy. I may do some posts here soon to let you know a little bit about our house. But this post is about handmade journals. Click on any of the journals to see them larger.

One day I was drawn to the beautiful orange color of my prescription bottle and I decided to paint it. I had a small 5x3 plain journal that I thought I'd make into a medical journal – we don’t really use it but it sure is cute!

I LOVE journaling – I keep prayer journals, sketchbook journals, travel journals, and any other kind of journal that comes to my mind. Because journals are expensive I like making my own sometimes. Here’s just a small sampling of some of the journals I’ve made since we’ve been renting (I’m sure I have more than this they are just packed up). I use ALL kinds of methods when making my journals. Sometimes I use plain journals I’ve bought at a store and add my own art work to the front.

Others I use pages torn out of old books I find at a local used bookstore and apply them to the front and back covers. I use all kinds of books – children books, animal books, dictionaries – anything that draws my attention and is cheap! I just apply the torn pages with glue – sometimes I add tape over the picture because it has a look about it I like.

Front cover of a journal I hand bound with hand torn watercolor paper.

I used the opposite page in the book and it created a fun front and BACK cover.

This is a color chart journal I hand bound with hand torn watercolor paper. I covered cardboard I cut from a box lying around with two pictures from a children’s book. The pictures made fun front and back covers. I just punched holes in the cardboard covers and the paper and tied with ribbon – very easy!
This next one I took pictures from an old bird book and dictionary. I layered the pages and then cut out letters from another used book to form the scripture for the cover. I wrapped the map around the cover so it would show on the inside cover. There were lots of pages I wanted to use from the bird book so I decorated the front and back cover (inside and out).

This cute kitty cat journal I made from one of my own paintings. I really liked the painting and tried a new printer to make some prints but they weren’t up to my standard. I couldn’t use the prints to sell but I sure didn’t want to throw them away – so this is one way that I reused a “throw away” print. I just cut it out and glued and taped it on a plain journal. You could do this with kid’s art, junk mail, or just about anything!

Here’s a small one (about 5×5) I made (again I think I just used cardboard as the base for the cover) and I covered it with an envelope from a friend in Africa. I loved the color and the stamp. I used scrap pieces of ribbon to connect the front and back cover and a simple rubber band to keep the book closed. For the back I used some black and white photo copies of some writing and bird. I have a box I keep in my art room where I throw any kinds of scraps, stickers, paper, envelopes, pictures, etc for use on things like this. I am constantly digging through that box using scraps for things.

This last one is one of my favorites and it was very simple! The cats and birdie were cut out of the same children’s book as the rooster above and glued onto the journal. I painted the little bird-cage around the birdie because I thought he’d look cute just hanging above the cats.

Here’s just a little look into another area of my art work and life of journaling. Wow – that may have been my longest post ever and it took me FOREVER because I’m quite rusty on posting. Hope to be back on here soon to share some of what we’re doing with our new house!
